Pierre Grimes and the Noetic Society

Overview

The Noetic Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit group with members in Southern California and around the world, who have been inspired to study Homer, Parmenides, the pre-Socratics, Plato, the neo-Platonists, and other perennial philosophers and mystics, not for academic reasons, but for personal spiritual growth. The society was founded by Pierre Grimes, PhD in 1967, and was incorporated in 1978.

Synopsis We continue our study of Plato’s Ion ( Balboa translation ) with Pierre. Pierre offers us many questions (see below), but the main thing at this point he is still challenging us to do is to: pull together as many quotes as we can to build up an understanding of what Socrates’ idea of an ‘art’ is, and especially a reciter’s (rhapsode’s) art (none of us have assembled the full list yet) use that definition to ask whether Socrates uses an art and knowledge that include the...

Synopsis Pierre leads the Noetic Society Parmenides study group through another session on Plato's Ion . We use mostly the Balboa translation , although we occasionally refer to the Loeb (Lamb), Rouse, and Taylor. For more study questions, check out the 2 recent previous sessions on the Ion, Sunday 5/17 and Saturday 5/23 . For a full list of Ion-related items in our archive, try this search . (Today's title a bit misleading, as "Understanding" does not have a knowledge that goes with...

Synopsis Pierre leads the Noetic Society Parmenides study group through another session on the 1st hypothesis, which we have been studying lately. Stephanus pages 139b-d (Parmenides/Aristoteles exchanges P1-041,042,048,049,050). (The numbering of the ‘exchanges’ of Parmenides and Aristotle come from our own Juan and Maria Balboa translation , jas-formatted edition.) It turns out this thing is understandable. At least in places. Once you know (or are getting closer to knowing) the kind of...

Synopsis Even though this is typically a Parmenides or Elements-of-Theology meeting scheduled at this time, Pierre wanted to continue on with Homer's Iliad . Specifically, Zeus' role is considered and his divine plan, and how anger is resolved in both gods and humans. (This is again a Jitsi-meet, during the coronavirus isolation..)
